Camcorder Basics

Posted by Stephanie

Hobbies are great outlets for creativity. Using your camcorder to record special events and then edit what you have captured can be very rewarding.

First of all, you need to decide what kind of camcorder you will need to purchase. This will be dictated by how you want to use your camcorder. Do you simply want to record video for family situations such as kids playing, birthday parties, barbecues, etc. or do you want to use your camcorder for business (real estate for example) or lastly do you want to be a professional videographer who video tapes corporate events or weddings? Cameras can range from just a few dollars to many thousands of dollars depending on what you need to use it for.

For this article we will concentrate on consumer camcorders rather than professional video camcorders. Consumer camcorders usually range in price from about $300 to $1500 on average.

Camcorders come in analog and digital styles. Today digital is the most popular style, which provides far superior results to analog.

Camcorders can be found with many features and special effects like black and white recording, sepia mode which adds an antique effect to images, fades, night shot mode which is helpful when there is little light and more. Much of the latter effects can also be done when editing your video.

Some camcorders offer still photos as well, but may not be as sharp as your digital camera. Looking for a camcorder where an external microphone can be plugged into it is preferred, especially when good audio is important. Wearing headphones to monitor your audio can be very helpful as well.

Extra batteries are a must when video taping. An external charger is great because you can be charging a battery while another is being used. Another very important feature to consider is optical image stabilization. This feature helps to prevent shakiness in your video taping especially when a tripod is not being used. Your images will be sharper and clearer. Tripods can also help to steady your filming and take the load off.

Camcorders come in many sizes from ones that fit in the palm of your hand to very large sizes. Consumers usually have smaller hand held video cameras, whereas more serious videographers will buy larger, more expensive camcorders with more sophisticated features. Mini DV (Digital video) is the most popular format today for consumer digital camcorders. This format is great for editing video on your computer.

When first getting your camcorder, practice shooting scenes and get familiar with the controls. Avoid jerky, quick movements when videotaping. You don’t want your audience to get dizzy watching your movie. For steadier shots brace yourself against a wall for example or use a tripod. Too much zooming in and out can look amateurish. Zoom slowly and infrequently.

Try to get a variety of shots from different angles to give interest to your movies. Take shots from high up angled down on your crowd or slouch down and angle the camera up to get a different angle. Take a lot of different shots as you can edit out what you don’t like later. If you take the time to plan your sequence before you shoot you will be more organized and have more interesting shots.

To get better audio you may want to use an external microphone. The store where you bought your camcorder can show you the different types of external microphones available.

For additional lighting the easiest way is to add a light to your camera. You can also buy a couple of fill lights that are put on either side of your camera to reduce the harsh light from your camera.

To edit your video you will need a fire wire connection. Your video camera should come with a fire wire cable that connects to your computer. There are many video editing software packages you can buy. Your computer may already come with software such as Windows Movie Maker. You can buy editing software for windows and Mac computers of which there are many choices. Pinnacle, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro are a few names that are popular today.

If this is your hobby, you can practice with an inexpensive camcorder at first and then graduate to a more professional video camera as you become more skilled. There are many books you can get on digital video. One I recommend is Digital Video for Dummies by Martin Doucette. Read as much as you can but most of all get out there and practice. You will get much better with experience.

Good Luck and Happy Shooting!

Vacation Packages

Posted by Stephanie

A vacation is really a combination of many items. On the surface, it seems that a vacation is little more than a destination. This is of course not an accurate assessment. Vacations are more than just the geographic area one visits. After all, the vacation does have to include lodging and accommodation in addition to a host of other items as well. Most people do realize this and that is why they seek a complete vacation. Unfortunately, they sometimes go about it by putting together a vacation on an a la carte basis. They will search for Cozumel flights and then Cozumel hotels. This is a huge mistake for several reasons. Instead, it would be much wiser to purchase a vacation package that encompasses everything.

The most common items that are required for a complete vacation package are airline tickets, hotel accommodation and car rental. There might be other specifications as well such as a hotel that accepts pets, a car that can accommodate six passengers etc. But, on a baseline level, a vacation must include a way to get to the destination, a place to stay and a way to get around. The way travelers put this together however, can sometimes be flawed.

For example, many people will try to purchase all these items separately. They will buy an airline ticket, call their favorite car rental agency ad book a sedan and the look for a hotel they like and book that as well. Now there is nothing wrong with this method. However, it can be quite costly. Remember, such a process involves piecing together parts of a whole from companies that are operating independently of each other. As such, the ability to put together a discount package deal is impossible.

When you purchase a vacation that includes all three previously mentioned items, you will usually receive them at some sort of discount. This is often facilitated by the travel agency (both online and brick and mortar) as an incentive to purchasing the package. After all, if not additional benefit was provided to purchasing a package deal most people would probably not seek them. Also such a purchase saves a lot of time. Instead of having to deal with various companies, the vacationer only has to deal with one. If there is a problem, it can resolved by contacting one agent, instead of three.

Really, it is a far better idea to stick with package deals rather than trying to put together a vacation on a piecemeal basis. Vacations should be enjoyable and not stressful so leave the designing to the pros.

Plasma Televison

Posted by Stephanie

Plasma television sets, also known as plasma HDTV displays have been available for several years; however, they are more popular than ever today. The main reason for the recent increase in popularity of plasma televisions is that they used to be very expensive, but now, since a lot of manufacturers are making them, the competition has grown and the cost of the plasma televisions has decreased. Another reason for plasma’s increased popularity is the fact that the technology has drastically increased the life of plasma televisions. In the infancy of the plasma televisions, the lifespan was only 30,000 to 40,000 hours. With the multitude of new technologies that have helped to increase the lifespan of plasma televisions, nowadays, the average plasma television life span is just as impressive as the picture.

Unlike the usual television screens, the plasma television screens are real space savers! Plasma mounts are made for the wall or ceiling or can be set on special stands that are built for plasma televisions. When switched on, a plasma television can dominate a room, but when switched off it can become an unobtrusive wall hanging. The viewing angle of the plasma television is 160 degrees so it shouldn’t be a problem viewing the television from several locations within the room.

Many newer plasma televisions have a set of high quality speakers attached on both sides of the screen. Although the built in speakers are sufficient enough to meet the needs of most causal television viewers, those that watch a lot of television or those who like the experience television or movies in “full movie theater quality” often prefer to add a home theater surround sound system to their plasma television.

The advertisers often talk about the benefits of having a plasma television at home but what they do not usually mention is what a plasma television really is and the technology behind it.

Plasma television provides a higher resolution than any other type of television monitors. A plasma screen contains literally millions of gas-filled cells (each one acting as a single image pixel) trapped between two pieces of glass. The most expensive and the most powerful plasma televisions can display over 16 million different colors.

A plasma television contains transistor electrodes. Instead of operating as a result of a laser hitting every single pixel like a traditional tube television, a plasma television is built with single transistor electrodes at each pixel. That is the reason why plasmas can be so small in size; you don’t need the massive space behind the television to accommodate an electrode gun. The picture on a plasma television is a result of each pixel varying in intensity to produce a different color, with this happening to every pixel a picture consisting of millions of pixels is produced.

No matter if you’re interested in the technology behind plasma televisions or not, if you’re looking for a high quality television that won’t take up a lot of space, plasma televisions are the way to go!

Car Insurance Costs Killing You?

Posted by Stephanie

Car insurance is one of the most irritating of bills for the average family. It’s getting more and more expensive to insure your car just as it is getting more and more expensive to run your car.

With fuel costs escalating out of control car running costs are becoming a serious burden for the average family, especially families with more than one car. For this reason more and more people are looking for ways to control the costs associated with their family transport.

And whereas you can’t bring the price of gas down you can do something to reduce your car insurance costs.

Car insurance rates are a reflection of the perceived risk that the insurance company takes on when it insures you. If the company sees the risks as higher then the insurance premium will be higher. If they see the risks of insuring you as lower then this also will reflect in your car insurance premium.

So reducing your premium is all about doing things to demonstrate that the risk when insuring your car is low.

7 Tips To Reducing Car Insurance Costs.

1. A major factor for any car insurance company in assessing the insurance premium you pay comes down to the type of car you drive. Different types of car attract different levels of premium because, in particular, different types of car are driven by different types of people, who may have different types of risk profile.

Sports cars, for example, will usually show a higher rate of accidents than staid boring family cars.

And there are always certain types of cars which attract thieves more than others, and this is reflected in the premiums you pay to insure them.

Your insurance company can tell you which types of cars are cheaper or more expensive to insure, so before you buy a car make some enquiries about whether that type of car is a high insurance premium car.

2. Consider your deductible. This is the amount you pay first out of any claim, and the cost of your policy is directly related to the amount of your deductible. Higher deductible - lower premium. So consider carefully whether you could afford to pay a higher amount first from any accident and raise your deductible. If so, you will get lower premiums.

3. Safety and anti theft devices can reduce the insurance costs for a car. Talk to your insurance company and find out if there are any safety or anti theft devices that you can install to reduce your premium. Then consider installing them making sure that you notify your insurance company once you have done so. And why not ring up your company and make sure that they are aware of any safety and anti theft devices you already have, if they aren’t you may get a reduction.

4. Drive carefully. It may sound obvious but as insurance premiums are related to risk then your manner of driving is related to your insurance premiums. Safer driver equals lower premiums. It may not seem so at the time but those traffic violations or speeding fines reflect in your bill.

5. Don’t just pay your premium each time it comes around without investigating if you can do better. Car insurance rates vary all the time and so even if it was the best rate last year it may not be this year. Every year shop around to see if you can do better, you may be surprised.

6. Have a look at other insurance policies you have with other companies. Many insurers offer discounts for combining all your family insurance with their company. Find out who they are and get a quote on all your policies combined.

7. Always look online for a competitive quote. Most of the major players and brokers are represented online and it is extremely competitive. It is very easy to get an online quote, just go to Google and search for car insurance quote and start looking.

These are just a few of the things that you can do, there are plenty more. Educate yourself about your car insurance, find out all you can about it and get more than one insurance quote once you know exactly what you do need, and what you don’t. You will find cheaper insurance.
