How to Design and Build the Perfect Outdoor Kitchen

Posted by Stephanie

An outdoor kitchen is the perfect complement to any house. Not only are you able to cook delicious meals outside in the warm summer evenings but also you will not have to be stuck in the main kitchen, missing all the fun outside.

In 2005, Americans spent nearly $150 billion remodeling their homes and $50 billion of this was spent on exterior living areas, meaning that outdoor kitchens are a hot trend! You will need at least a few thousand dollars before beginning your outdoor kitchen but consider it an investment. Before you rush out to buy materials and appliances, here are some things you should know about outdoor kitchens and their design.

Outdoor Kitchen Design

There are three basic outdoor kitchen designs, which are a L-shaped island, a basic island, and a U-shaped center. A L-shaped island has space for both cooking and preparation. A basic island features a sink, a grill, and a space for preparation. Basic islands tend to be small so if you are going to be cooking for more than a couple of people, you might want to consider another type. A U-shaped center has a grill in the middle and spaces on either side for preparation and serving. This is a handy design if you want to be able to serve food straight from the grill without leaving it.

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets

Remember that outdoor kitchens will be exposed to sunlight, water, and cold temperatures, So you need to use durable materials for the countertops and cabinets. Marble, granite, brick and various manmade materials are good to use. Wood rots easily, especially if left untreated. It is also highly flammable. Outdoor kitchens are supposed to last for many years, so you should invest in the best quality cabinets and countertops you can afford.

Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

The centerpiece of all outdoor kitchens are the grills. You can choose a gas grill or a charcoal grill. Gas grills offer better temperature control but charcoal grills give a better flavor to the food. You will need a waterproof cover for your grill, if it is exposed to the elements.

You will also need a kitchen island. These can be bought in one piece or designed yourself. Suitable materials include stone, stainless steel, and stucco. It is handy to have an outdoor sink, which draws from a potable water hose or the house’s water supply. Dress it up with a beautiful bar faucet.  An outdoor refrigerator is another possibility but a refrigerator kept outdoors will have a maximum life span of five years because of the fluctuating outdoor temperatures.

How to Build an Outdoor Kitchen

The first thing to do is plan exactly what you want and need. Also, think about what type of cooking you will do and how often, your budget, whether you want the outdoor kitchen to be a fixture or movable arrangement, how many people you will be feeding and whether the food will be eaten outside or brought in.

When you have a firm idea of what is required, you can either build your own outdoor kitchen or hire a contractor to help. Outdoor kitchens should be near the house so you can bring food in and out but not in an area where smoke will blow into the house or into the faces of your guests. Other safety precautions include making sure the grill is a comfortable thirty-six inches high and not using any flammable materials in your outdoor kitchen construction.

Once you have your plans and materials ready, it is time to build the perfect outdoor kitchen, where your family and friends will enjoy making delicious meals for many years!

Beware the Toxic Chemicals in Your Mattress

Posted by Stephanie

For years we have been taught that a good night’s sleep is a healthy habit to have. A good 7-8 hours of sleep means that one third of our life should be spent in bed. Recent discoveries have found that while sleeping 7-8 hours a night is healthy, sleeping in a bed may not be such a healthy idea. While our faces are plastered into a pillow and sleeping on a new mattress, we may be literally gassing ourselves to death.

Toxic Chemicals in Pillows

Pillows are often made of Styrofoam which contains polystyrene. This petroleum-based chemical has been known to cause symptoms of fatigue, difficulty sleeping, nervous disorders, menstrual cycle problems, alterations in blood cells, chromosome and lymphatic abnormalities and possibly has carcinogenic effects on humans.

It has been shown that in subjects tested for styrene, a full 100% were found to have styrene in their fat cells and they couldn’t find a single lactating mother who didn’t test positive for these chemicals in her breast milk.

In addition to polystyrene, pillows are known to contain polyurethane foam and polyethylene. These fillers are made by combining some very toxic chemicals to make polyfil, the major component of the pillows we use today.

Recent published information showed that the plastic bottles we are using for baby formula and drinking water are leaching chemicals out into the contents of the bottle. This raises the question as to whether these chemicals are also being released into the air surrounding our pillow and mattress while we sleep.

A company called Chem-Tox has done extensive studies on the effect that petroleum based products have on humans. The number of human ailments such as cancer, asthma, infertility, and neurological problems that have been tied to these chemicals is growing larger and larger. The alarming rise in autism over the last half century raises questions as to the link between these chemicals and this syndrome.

Toxic Chemicals in Mattresses

As of 2007, all mattresses are required to contain enough Fire Retardant to withstand being subjected to a 24 inch blowtorch flame for a total of 70 seconds. It has been estimated that 90% of all mattress manufacturers use a highly toxic brand of fire retardant because it is less expensive to use. In addition, manufacturers have switched from filling mattresses with natural products to using toxic synthetic petroleum based products as fillings in an effort to save money.

Studies are showing that sleeping on these mattresses, night after night, year after year is increasing our risk of developing a host of health problems. By the time a child is 5 years of age they have spent thousands of hours exposed to these chemicals in their mattresses and pillows. It’s a scary thought.

Modern foam mattresses are made of a toxic soup of nearly 60 different chemicals. The flame retardant solution used on mattresses contains antimony, boric acid (the stuff used to kill the persistent cockroach) and DECABROMODIPHENYL OXIDE.

Any type of sofa bed, crib, fold-out bed, futon and mattress made of synthetic materials must contain a flame retardant, but nowhere is the safety of these chemicals made readily available to consumers.

Chemical Free Mattresses

A search of the Internet will give you sites that sell chemical free mattresses. If the mattress is made of all natural materials such as cotton or wool, they do not require flame retardant.

Beware of a company that advertises that it produces a “green” mattress. Sometimes they add natural products in addition to the standard toxic foam and call it green. Due diligence is needed before you make a mattress purchase. Do a lot of research to be sure your mattress is safe and free of harmful chemicals.

All Natural Anti Wrinkle Face Cream - Why You Need to Use One

Posted by Stephanie

Anti-wrinkle face cream has become a big-ticket item as more and more people seek to turn back the hands of time. There are many products on the market today which can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and even prevent their development. However, in order to successfully treat the skin, the use of the best eye cream, lotions and other skincare products must be part of a careful overall health regimen.

Treating the signs of aging begins with avoiding their most common causes and maintaining overall health. Your body will only look as good as it feels, so it is essential that you address your skin care issues from the inside out. Face wrinkle creams can help at the surface level, but a healthy lifestyle will ensure that your entire body is as fit and strong as possible.

Not surprisingly, the most important steps in maintaining the health of your skin are getting a healthy, balanced diet and proper exercise. Eating right can go a long way toward producing healthy, glowing skin. Anti-wrinkle face cream can address existing problems, but nothing can fully replace living healthy. It is truly the best revenge!

It is equally important that you avoid the biggest causes of skin damage, particularly sun exposure. Nothing causes dryness and wrinkling more than excess sun. The most effective face wrinkle cream will contain some level of sun protection, specifically an SPF of 15 or more. By blocking the effects of the sun’s rays, these products can help the skin to remain soft and supple.

Another important irritant to avoid is smoke. Smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin and depletes your natural stores of collagen and elastin, resulting in dry, leathery skin. Anti-wrinkle face cream can help to treat the effects of smoking but nothing will work better than avoiding smoking entirely.

If treating the signs of aging is an issue for you, then you want to be sure to use an all-natural product made solely from organic, plant-based ingredients. Not only will this allow you to avoid potentially damaging synthetic ingredients, it will expose your skin to the safest, gentlest, healthiest treatment available today. Face wrinkle cream made from all-natural ingredients can provide proper hydration, nourish the skin and promote collagen growth to restore elasticity.

With the inclusion of vitamin E and other powerful natural antioxidants, all-natural products can also work to rid the body of harmful free radicals and other toxins, helping the skin to heal itself from within. An anti-wrinkle face cream will only be truly effective if it penetrates beneath the surface and addresses problems at their source.

We all want to hold off the hands of time, and that fight begins with living a healthy life and making informed choices. By taking the extra time to eat right, exercise, avoid smoking and sun exposure and use only the healthiest all natural skin care products, we can treat our bodies with the care they deserve. We only get one chance at life… it’s up to us to make the best of it.

Understanding the Value of Life Insurance

Posted by Stephanie

When someone dies, there will typically be an identifiable financial loss. It might be the primary income for a family. Or, it might be the intrinsic value of the person who was responsible for the care of children or a feeble adult.

It could even be a company business associate who spearheaded the sales division or someone who took charge of its operation when senior management needed to be absent.

This is sometimes referred to as the human life value of the deceased party. The value itself is usually based on the future loss of income (i.e. salary or paycheck), the future cost of replacement (i.e. child caring or adult caregiver), or the immediate net loss to the company while it struggles to replace the key employee.

For many people, the loss of income is the primary reason to buy life insurance. Losing the paycheck of either deceased spouse will leave most families in a tenuous situation because this usually means their normal lifestyle becomes vulnerable to readjustment.

In the postwar fifties, the primary breadwinner was usually the father. Mother did the cooking and cleaning, while father went to the office. Mom was there when the kids came home from school. And Dad was working 9 to 5 in order to bring home the paycheck.

Today, of course, women participate equally in the workforce. While there continues to be a discrepancy in the amount of earned income between the sexes, nevertheless, the money Mom brings home is vital to the financial well-being of the family.

It is no secret that personal debt per capita in the U.S. is higher than ever. The latest data reveals we are in a negative savings posture, which is something that hasn’t occurred since 1932. Any reduction in take home pay can potentially devastate literally hundreds of thousands of families.

This scenario is grim enough while both parties are alive. The reality of what happens at the death of either breadwinner is frightening to say the least.

Life insurance is an important financial asset. In fact, it should be the primary asset for families that might experience severe lifestyle disruptions in the event of someone’s death.

Unfortunately, life insurance is frequently misunderstood by the very people it can help the most. One reason is because life insurance doesn’t benefit the insured party, who is typically the person paying for the life insurance. After all, the insured party will be dead and unable to witness the undeniable family value of the death proceeds.

Ironically, the second reason for this misunderstanding is because some life insurance has a cash surrender value. This means if the owner of the policy decides to stop paying the premium an amount of cash is returned provided the death benefit is surrendered.

It’s important to recognize there are only two types of life insurance: term and cash value. Term is always cheapest in the early years, but becomes prohibitively expensive when one reaches the age of 70, or thereabouts.

Of course, this is before the normal or expected time of death, so it is highly unlikely that a term policy will actually pay the death benefit unless, of course, one dies prematurely.

There are many types of cash value policies to include the classic whole life insurance, universal life, variable life and universal variable life. The competitive marketplace has produced an overwhelming number of hybrids each one created for a specific reason that was initiated due to government intervention.

This article will not attempt to describe each type of policy. The important message here relates to the extraordinary value of life insurance itself… not any particular policy type.

Indeed, there are very few, if any recipients of a life insurance death claim that have asked an insurance agent what “type” of policy had been issued. The fact of the matter is the tax-free death proceeds provided a welcomed amount of cash at exactly the time when money was needed the most.

This, of course, is when the income of one of the breadwinners was unexpectedly and abruptly cut off from the family forever. The type of policy is not important to the survivors. The only thing of importance to the survivors is that the policy was actually in force at the time of death.

Understanding Your Home Insurance Policy

Posted by Stephanie

Mention home insurance and you often feel like you’ve committed a deadly sin. People glare at you and most will immediately start telling you a horror story. Some complain bitterly about their experience when having to claim on their home insurance policies. Listen to the whole story and quite often it is clear that ignorance or carelessness on their part cost them dearly.

Being informed and understanding what your home insurance policy is all about can make a whole lot of difference.

When looking for an insurance company you should check on a few things before making your final decision.

Always make sure that the company is licensed to do business in your state.

Compare packages, taking into consideration the premium, what is offered, speed in settling and quality of service.

Take the time to do some research on the financial strength of the company. Insurance rating services such as Moody’s, A M Best etc. can help you in this respect. Make sure the information is up to date.

By asking your neighbors and friends you could find an insurer with a good track record and good rates in your neighborhood.

Once you have found the company of your choice, make sure you fully understand the conditions of coverage as well as the correct claims procedure.

Replacing household items cost more every year. To make sure you have the correct coverage, it is necessary to update the information and amount insured at least once a year.

When purchasing new items, keep the receipts in a safe place. Should you ever have to claim, your insurer might need these. Check with your insurer on things that you remove from the house occasionally, such as cameras, laptops etc. You will most probably have to specify them separately.

Keep an inventory of your household goods. Taking photos or making a video is a good way of keeping record. Many people also engrave their household goods with an identification number. This makes it a lot easier to identify your possessions should you have to.

Make sure you adhere to the conditions of your policy. If a condition of your coverage is to have an alarm system, make sure it is working perfectly at all times. Arm the alarm when the house is empty. Remember that your insurer will not pay, should there be a burglary, if the alarm wasn’t armed or working properly.

Always give true and proper information. Should you ever have to claim, even something you did not consider as important might affect your claim. All the members of the household must me noted, even lodgers.

Make sure your premiums are paid on time. A typical grace period after payment is due is 5 days. Should you suffer a loss while your premium payment is outstanding, your insurer could refuse to pay.

If your home will be empty for an extended period, inform your insurance company. If you make changes to the property, notify them. Certain structures might have an influence on you premium (such as adding a lapa with a thatched roof).

Household insurance might be a necessary evil where many people are concerned. However, how you handle it can make the difference between having a pleasant or very nasty experience, should you ever have to submit a claim.
