Tips for Losing the Most Stubborn Pounds

Posted by Stephanie

Here are several tips that will help you shed that unwanted weight and create a more healthy and attractive figure.

Increase Protein

When you diet, keep your protein at 55% of your calories. This will help you maintain your muscle mass and keep your metabolism elevated. Eat low-fat protein sources like chicken breasts, egg whites, and fish.

Eat 75%

When you sit down to eat, look at your plate and leave 25%, eating only 75% and thereby cutting as many as 300 calories from every meal.

Lift Some Weights

Do a small 20 minute program of lifting weights twice a week along with cardiovascular exercise to build up muscle strength, replacing fat with muscle.

Move Around More

An obese person spends an average of 2.5 hours more daily in a chair than a thin person. Try walking back and forth while talking on a cell or cordless phone, use the steps rather than the elevator, and park farther away and walk to your destination.

Weigh Yourself Monthly

Don’t weigh yourself too often and become discouraged by the up and down variations from day to day. Weigh yourself at the same time every month to better see long term trends in your weight.

Buy A Pedometer

This is a very accurate way to make sure you take at least 10,000 steps a day to help you reach and maintain your weight loss goals as you walk to do your various errands and activities.

Have Your Thyroid Tested

If you are adding weight, have joint and muscle aches, have unusual facial puffiness, or are unusually tired, this could be the sign of a sluggish thyroid slowing down your metabolism, causing weight gain. This can be remedied by taking the right medications.

Reduce Stress

When you are stressed, your adrenal gland generates the cortisol stress hormone, which increases your appetite and triggers release of the insulin fat-storing hormone, causing your body to hold onto fat, even if you are eating less.

But often, stress makes you overeat comfort foods like chocolate, ice cream, potato chips, cookies and donuts. Those high carbohydrate goodies raise your serotonin levels, boosting your mood in a form of self-medication. Salty snacks raise blood pressure, which also raises cortisol levels, contributing to a vicious cycle of overeating.

To break this cycle, you should set a fixed eating schedule and stick to it. Schedule your three meals and three snacks throughout the day so you always have something to eat every three or four hours. Savor every bite instead of gulping down too much before your brain tells you that you are full. Regular exercise and relaxing can also relieve your stress.

So when even the best diet pills won’t work, try these simple techniques to get the body that you want.

Dumbbells for Smart Weight Training

Posted by Stephanie

Lifting weights to develop muscle and strength is at an all time high in popularity.

The reason? It works!

However, there are some factors you should keep in mind. When using a barbell with weights, you should workout with a partner. When you are lying down on a weight bench pushing hard to get that last repetition and you hit a sticking point, you could be in serious trouble.

When the weights get stuck in this position, even lifting it above your neck, past your head and dropping it to the floor can become an impossible task.

In addition, when cheating to get some extra repetitions in doing a bicep curl using a barbell, for example, you need to swing your body to get momentum to lift the weights. This can cause a strain or result in a pulled muscle.

That doesn’t mean you should abandon weights. If you have a training partner, great. If not, consider going to a gym. There are generally plenty of people around who can come to your rescue.

A better alternative for you just might be a set of dumbbells.

Using the example just given, do the bench press with dumbbells. You get a better stretch at the bottom of the repetition and, if you do get stuck and can’t get that last repetition in, drop them to your side and allow them to hit the floor.

When doing that bicep curl, do one arm at a time. When you have done all the repetitions you can do correctly, use your free hand to apply enough pressure to help do another repetition, and then slowly lower the dumbbell. Do a couple more if you like.

This will definitely pump your arms like nothing you’ve done before, and is much safer than using a barbell. You also get a full range of motion, getting a full stretch and giving your muscles a more beneficial workout.

If you want more of a challenge, use dumbbells on an exercise ball. The ball creates instability which causes your body’s core muscles to work hard to keep you on the ball. If you do lose balance, it is much easier to toss aside the dumbbells than it is to toss aside the barbell.

There are numerous exercises you can do using dumbbells and you can do them at home; with or without a training partner.

Dumbbells are not very expensive and may just be one of the best pieces of exercise equipment you own.

If you are looking for weight bearing exercise with a kick, try Kettlebell.  It is  a fun and unique approach.

“Camping” In An RV For Fun And Adventure

Posted by Stephanie

Camping for most people means a tent and sleeping on a mat on the ground. If that doesn’t really appeal to you, then camping in an RV is what you need. It is the ultimate camping adventure.

RV’s come in many sizes and shapes. They start with campers that fit in the back of a pickup truck. These can have full kitchens, beds, a shower and toilet in them.

Next there are van conversions called Class B motorhomes that are basically a cargo van converted into a camping vehicle. These can have a raised roof for more head room. They also contain the same amenities as the truck camper.

Next up is the Class C motorhome. The front end looks like a pickup truck, but the similarity ends there. There is a sleeper extension over the cab and the back end looks like any motorhome you are probably familiar with. Basically a cargo box with windows, but much prettier. The Class C has all the amenities of home. A kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room. You could live in a Class C.

The next step us is the Class A motorhome. This is roomiest of all motorized RVs. These motorhomes are like a mini one bedroom apartment. They are fully self contained. From the queen sized bed to the dinette that seats four people you find luxury. A refrigerator and stove are complimented by a microwave oven. You might even have an ice maker capable of making over 20 pounds of ice a day. Party ready!

If that weren’t enough choices, there are still the trailers. First is the travel trailer you can pull behind a larger sedan or SUV. Then the 5th wheel trailer that hooks into the back of a pickup truck. Both of these trailers are equally as luxuriant as the best motorhome. An advantage is they cost a lot less.

You can buy new or used. Whichever way you choose, you should do a lot of research on the internet first. Learn all you can about RVing. There are RV forums that you can find by doing a search in your favorite search engine.

When you decide that an RV might be for you, attend an RV show or two. There are major RV shows at fairgrounds and stadiums where many dealers and vendors are selling every type of RV there is. There are also local RV shows usually put on by one or two dealers to show and sell some of their inventory.

If you really are not sure you would like to spend $40,000 or $250,000 on a hobby you are not sure you would like, buy a used RV. You can get into RVing in a 34 foot used Class A motorhome for under $10,000.

The older and larger the motorhome the less fuel efficient it will be. You may get 5 to 7 miles per gallon on many older motorhomes. 7-9 mpg is realistic for mid 1990’s motorhomes and up to 12 miles a gallon on new ones.

Camping in an RV is a fun adventure awaiting you and your family.  Looking for financing?  Good Sam does rv finance.

5 Tips For Planning A Cheap Family Vacation

Posted by Stephanie

These are not good times for the economy. The price of everything – especially gas – seems to be rising every single day and salaries aren’t going anywhere. In fact, there are jobs being lost every day. Yet families need to take vacations. Here are 5 tips for planning a cheap family vacation.

1. Eat in

The cost of the vacation isn’t simply doing things, seeing things, and staying overnight places. Often the majority of the money you spend is spent at restaurants. So you can dramatically cut your costs by making your own food. It can be as simple as buying a loaf of bread along with peanut butter and jelly and a bag of chips. Every meal you make yourself will save you a lot of money.

2. Go to built-in fun

Another great tip for planning a cheap family vacation is to go to places where you don’t have to pay to have fun. Go to the mountains where you can hike, camp, and swim. Go to the Outer Banks where you can spend your days on the beach and swimming. This will save you lots of money.

3. Explore close to home

With the price of gas, this is a really great tip. Before you drive or fly across the country, explore the great things that are closer to home. If you do a little research on the Internet you’ll be surprised by the great things you find. Try to keep your travel to under 250 miles if at all possible.

4. Go at non-peak

Everything is more expensive at peak times. So places that are built for tourists will jack their prices up when they know they’ll be packed with guests. But that doesn’t mean the places aren’t fun at non-peak times. In fact, they can be even more fun. So try to plan your trip when it’s cheapest.

5. Look into rentals

Instead of spending a lot of money to stay at a hotel or motel look into renting a place for a week. You may be able to find a nice little cabin. Or you could rent a huge house and take a vacation with friends and family members. You will save a lot of money in the long run.

The family that plays together stays together. Therefore, it’s important to take a family vacation. However, it can be very expensive. 5 tips for planning a cheap family vacation are to eat in, go to built-in fun, explore close to home, go at non-peak, and look into rentals.

Living Outdoors On Your Patio

Posted by Stephanie

You can make your patio into an ideal place to relax after a hard day’s work, and transform it into a great setting for entertaining friends and family. All you have to do is ensure that you decorate and furnish it appropriately. The right patio decor can make all the difference. You can create a beautiful tranquil outdoor setting — just make sure you don’t throw the whole look off with some bad choices.

Before creating the perfect outdoor space on your patio, you need to figure out and understand how you want to use it. If you want to relax and entertain on your patio, realize that it is an outdoor space, and that you want it to be relaxed, but bordering on formal.

Realize also that your patio furnishings will be exposed to the elements year-round, unless you bring them in for winter storage. The summer sun will beat down on your patio furniture, so you will need to find pieces that won’t fade in sunlight. For patios where rain is not a problem, either in desert climets or where the patio has a sheltering roof-overhang, wicker furniture is a popular, elegant choice. If rain is a problem, though, cedar patio furniture works, but teak tends to have more style.

You have a number of options to choose from when it comes to outdoor furniture. We’ve already mentioned wicker, cedar and teak. Similar to wicker, there is also rattan with an air of sophisticated informality. Regardless of material, though, make sure your patio furniture is well-treated and designed for outdoor use. Otherwise, it probably won’t stand up to extended outdoor exposure.

Next up, you will want to consider your cushions. The major problem here is with fabrics that can discolor, fade and become ruined when daily exposed to UV. Laminated cotton, vinyl coated polyester and acrylic materials are some of your most rugged fabric choices.

So, what pieces should you get? If you want to eat outside, you will definitely want a patio dining set with four or six chairs and a dining table. In addition, you should either get a large patio umbrella or have a roll-up or retractable patio awning installed. Be careful with umbrellas — always close them up when not in use, and store them in a sheltered area like a garage during storms. Awnings, too, should be retracted when not in use. Retractable awnings are more expensive than umbrellas, but are also more convenient and offer greater coverage.

A couple of Adirondack chairs and a hammock will make your patio more inviting to lounge in, but patio carpeting to cover the concrete and cushion your feet, and a couple of cedar planters with herbs or flowers should make things homey and pull the whole patio together for you.
